NEWPORT—Members of the
Newport/Cocke County Economic Development Commission board of directors, meeting Thursday at
Jefferson-Cocke County Utility, learned more about TNECD (Tennessee Economic & Community
Development) and also about Tennessee’s increasing tourism development and impact on local
Dr. Kendrick Curtis, TNECD Director of Community &
Rural Development presented a short program about such programs as ThreeStar, Select Tennessee,
Retire Tennessee, and Tennessee Main Street and its affiliated Tennessee Downtowns, and Adventure
Tennessee with emphasis on how towns and counties can participate in the efforts.
"We work to provide Tennessee’s rural counties and small towns with the tools and
resources needed to attract high quality jobs and foster economic growth," Curtis said.
Also sharing information with the group was Dave Jones, Regional Representative
of the Tennessee Department of Tourism.
"We’re very pleased that Gov.
Haslam has recommended an additional $6 million for tourism in Tennessee," Jones said, "and we urge
you to speak to your legislative representatives and senators to support this."
