NEWPORT—The Cocke County Elementary Basketball tournament got underway on Monday night with a pair of opening round games and a lone quarterfinal matchup.

No surprises happened on the opening night of the annual event, as the higher seeds advanced to the next round in each game of the tournament, hosted at Cocke County High School.

In girls play, No. 8 Del Rio held on for a win over No. 9 Northwest in the opening round, and No. 2 Bridgeport advanced to the semifinals with a quarterfinal win over No. 7 Cosby.

In boys play, No. 8 Grassy Fork used a stellar performance from sixth-grader Braden Shaffer to topple No. 9 Northwest in opening round play.

Quarterfinal action in the tournament continues tonight with three games on tap, beginning at 5 p.m.
