JOHNSON CITY—ETSU head football coach Carl Torbush announced the program’s first recruiting class during a media event Wednesday at the Millennium Centre in Johnson City.
The overall class includes 46 commitments, 34 of whom are from the state of Tennessee, along with other players from Florida, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. In addition, 73 percent of the class had a high school grade point average of 3.0 or better, and as a group there are 14 state champions.
Torbush said he was extremely pleased with the work of his two-man coaching staff and thankful for the support of others who helped make this recruiting class so successful.
“Today’s announcement of our first recruiting class continues to build the excitement that surrounds the ETSU football program,” Torbush said. “We could not have done this without the help of many people, and I want to thank our ETSU faculty and athletic administration, our academic staff, cafeteria personnel, our cheerleading and dance teams, Carnegie Hotel, Bristol Motor Speedway, the ETSU baseball team, the Center for Physical Activity staff, and the athletic department’s compliance staff for all they have done to help us with our recruiting process.
“And especially the work put in by our football staff – in particular assistant coaches Billy Taylor and Teddy Gaines – has been remarkable. It’s been impressive to secure this many commitments with a start-up program.”
This first recruiting class will have the benefit of a full year to practice, get stronger and prepare for the team’s first official season in 2015. ETSU’s first game against Kennesaw State is scheduled for September 3, 2015.
