After nearly two years, ahead of schedule, and with no prior public announcement, the Wolf Creek Bridge over the French Broad River reopened on Sunday afternoon.Cocke County Mayor Vaughn Moore was among the first to travel across the bridge after it re-opened."I think they had initially planned to open it earlier but had to delay it because of the weather," said Moore. "I had heard it might have opened on Saturday and I drove up there Sunday to see. It just so happened they were removing the barriers when I got up there."The bridge on Highway 25/70, the main route between Newport and Hot Springs, N.C., had been closed since April 10, 2012. Local residents were forced to use Fugate Road between Del Rio and the state line as an alternate route. For more details, please see the Tuesday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
