Stephenson again denied relief in death penalty case

NEWPORT—Capital murder defendant Jonathan Wesley Stephenson has once again been denied a new trial or other legal relief in his latest appeal of his 1990 first-degree murder conviction.Stephenson, 49, was first convicted in connection with the 1989 shooting death of his wife, Lisa Gail Stephenson, in 1989 in the Bruner’s Grove community of Cocke County and was sentenced to death by the trial jury. Since that first conviction, the defendant has filed numerous appeals and motions for a new trial in his case.For more details, please see the Thursday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
