Local officials said they're prepared for frigid temperatures

NEWPORT-Road salt crews with the city's street department worked for six hours, from 5 a.m. to about 11 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 6, to cover all roads within the city limits in order to make the streets passable and safe, while law enforcement in the city and county say they're standing by with four-wheel drive vehicles to respond to emergency call today.Ben Hicks, City of Newport Street Department superintendent, said Monday, "We came in this morning when snow hit and started salting the roads. They're in real bad shape. We're salting first the main streets and emergency crews' stations, such as police and fire departments, so they can respond to calls.For more details, please see the Tuesday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
