NEWPORT-Ice, snow and extreme cold resulted in many icy roads Monday and Tuesday resulting in Cocke County and Newport Grammar Schools and many Cocke County government offices being closed.Cocke County Mayor Vaughn Moore said the decision to close county offices was based mainly on road conditions."Several of the back roads were extremely dangerous," said Mayor Moore.Cocke County Road Supt. Kenneth Ford said that some areas in the mountains had received 4 to 5 inches of snow last week. He said the rain that preceded the latest winter storm, combined with the bitterly cold temperatures, is causing the biggest problem."There wasn't that much that much snow this time," said Ford. "But the roads are icy."Ford said Cocke County Highway Department crews came in at 1 a.m. Monday and began treating roads. For more details, please see the Tuesday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
