NEWPORT—As temperatures plunged and snow and ice closed
local schools, government offices, and many businesses, Newport Utilities
reported few power outages and only one water main break as of Monday
Jimmy Robertson, manager of the NU Electric Department, said
the company "has experienced a few scattered, small outages in the past 24
hours due mainly to wind and trees. The cold weather and snow have not affected
the power system at this time."
Clint Hammonds, also with NU, said the water main break
occurred Sunday on Armory Road. "We’ve had no others at this time," Hammonds
said. "Most likely if we have breaks, they will show up as the temperatures
start to warm back up."
