Changes in 2014 land payments could affect Cocke County

With a large amount of land within the Cherokee National Forest, changes in the PILOT program could have a major impact on Cocke County.Federally owned property brings in a hefty amount of money to federal governments each year, but that could change in 2014.  PILOT, which stands for payments in lieu of taxes, are disbursements from the federal government to local governments to balance the losses in property taxes on nontaxable lands within the area. This money assists rural counties with everything from the construction of roads and schools to fire and police protection. For more details, please see the Thursday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
