NEWPORT-Drivers seen cutting through parking lots or other shortcuts to avoid traffic lights at an intersection will get warnings from police officers until Friday, Jan. 10, when citations will be given out.The Newport City Council passed an ordinance at its December meeting that prohibits the bypassing of traffic control devices by accessing private or public property devoted to something other than highway use. Newport Police Department Chief Maurice Shults stated in a press release that the NPD decided to allow a 30-day grace period for drivers in order to make them aware of the new ordinance before it goes into effect. For more details, please see the Thursday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
