WHITE PINE-Funeral services for Oran Harris, a World War II  'atomic soldier,' will be held at 7:00 p.m. tonight at Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine.

Harris, 89, a Cocke County native, died Monday afternoon, December 16, 2013, at Jefferson County Nursing Home following a short illness.

Born September 27, 1924 in The Gulf, a remote Cocke County community bordering the TN/NC stateline, Harris was the son of the late David and Debbie (Laws) Harris and the last surviving member of their family.

At the time of his birth, The Gulf, now part of the Martha Sundquist State Forest, was a thriving lumber community. The Harris family owned a 30-acre farm in the area and lived there until 1945.
