The rain subsided long enough on Saturday afternoon for the
annual Newport Christmas Parade to entertain the curbside crowds. Several friendly faces and local businesses
came together to march the streets of downtown Newport and spread some holiday
cheer. Several churches, regional beauty
queens, county schools, and all local volunteer fire departments participated.
This year’s theme for the parade was "Christmas Around the
World", and several of the winning floats surely showcased that theme. Winning 1st Place this year was
Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church with a worldly theme. The CCHS Student Council
scored 2nd place by displaying a globe in the center of their float. The Newport Bootscooters snagged 3rd
place with a wagon full of holiday riders.
The Mayor’s Choice Award went to Smoky Mountain Home Health and
Hospice. Their float featured
gingerbread men and flags from several different countries.
The parade was organized by Cocke County Partnership. Director Valerie Fancher said they were
pleased to have 90% of people that registered show up, despite the
unpredictable weather. There were over
seventy entries this year, and organizers were pleased with the community
turnout. Fancher has already received
phone calls asking about next year’s parade theme. Members have decided the 2014 theme will be
"Christmas in Candy Land."
