NEWPORT-Unhappy that temporary fireworks "tent" vendors, and other similar vendors, come to town, set up shop, collect profits, and leave - without paying local sales taxes to the city - the planning commission approved two ordinances that hike permit fees from a current $50 to $500, in essence to make up for perceived lost sales tax revenue. The Newport Regional Planning Commission, meeting Tuesday, Nov. 26, passed a zoning ordinance, and then a second ordinance changing the municipal code, to allow for the $500 permit fee, which will be good for 16 days per permit. For more details, please see the Thursday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
