JEFFERSON CITY—A ranked team. Entertaining a packed house. All the while dispatching their rivals.
Wednesday night’s South Atlantic Conference opener certainly had the feel of old times at Holt
Fieldhouse on the campus of Carson-Newman University.

Only these weren’t the good old days, which inspired current C-N coach Chuck Benson’s dream to one day be the Eagles’ coach.

Instead they are the current times as Benson walks the sideline in Holt Fieldhouse. In his fourth year at the helm of the Carson-Newman program, the Eagles are experiencing a basketball revival of sorts.

After hovering around the .500 mark in Benson’s first two years as head coach, the Eagles vaulted into a fourth place finish in The SAC last year and are poised to ride that momentum into the current season, with a lot of firsts. The Eagles, off of their first 20-win season in a decade, have backed up their first preseason NABC national ranking since 2002-03 with a 3-0 start. Carson-Newman’s start
included a victory over NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Barton by a 97-69 score in the season opener last Friday, along with the program’s third straight victory over Tusculum College on Wednesday night.

“We’ve got some good things going on,” Benson said. “We’ve been fortunate to get some notice in the top-25 polls, that’s good stuff, and we’ve got some kids that are exciting to watch.”
