Those are something the Cocke County Lady Red basketball team will have to adjust to very quickly.
The Lady Red flew under the radar a season ago and caught many in league by surprise, capturing both the District 2-AAA regular season and tournament titles. They followed that with a Region 1-AAA Tournament victory over Volunteer, before falling one win short of a Class AAA sectional appearance in a five-point loss to Tennessee High.
This season, with several returning players, there is no sneaking up on anyone. And Lady Red coach Jeremy Byrd acknowledged that everyone in the district will be gunning for them.
“We’ve got a target on our back, there’s no doubt about it,” Byrd said. “We’re going to get everybody’s ‘A’ game. The girls and I have discussed that. They understand that there are no gimmes. I just want to kill their expectations immediately for them because they could start thinking about all of what they ‘should’ be doing and their season could crumble.
“We’re just going to keep things in perspective. We won a lot of close games last year that could’ve went either way. We were 13-1 in the district but we could have very well been 7-7 or 8-6,” Byrd said. “We’re looking to do it again this year though. We’re going to give it our best. We fully expect to be there.”
