NEWPORT—One hundred sixty-two cases naming at least 153 defendants were considered this week in a two-day session of the Cocke County Grand Jury.Of the 94 cases heard on Monday, grand jurors returned 50 true bills of indictment, one no true bill, 24 sealed presentments, and 19 presentments which were unsealed by Circuit Judge Ben W. Hooper II. Then on Tuesday, the panel returned 44 more indictments, 27 sealed presentments, 13 no true bills, and eight unsealed presentments.Indictments and presentments are both ways in which to bring criminal charges against defendants in circuit court. A presentment differs from an indictment in that the case originated with the grand jury rather than with warrants and proceedings in general sessions court. Presentments are routinely sealed from public inspection until the arrest of the defendants named in the documents. For more details, please see the weekend edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
