NEWPORT"Northwest Elementary served as sort of a pilot program," said Dr. Shannon Grooms on Thursday, in speaking to Chamber of Commerce members about the therapist from Helen Ross McNabb Center who began serving the school last year. "Helen Ross McNabb Center is one of the greatest programs to reach out to us."

Grooms was one of those praising the Center at the Chamber of Commerce's quarterly breakfast on Thursday at the Community Center.

"My school counselor can't handle the load we have," said Grooms, "and Helen Ross McNabb helped in teaching our kids to deal with physical, emotional and mental, social, and academic challenges."

"I'm very proud of our students and parents," he continued. "Northwest had the highest TVASS scores of any local school this past year, partly because we have raised both student and teacher morale. By having a fulltime therapist on hand, our moms and dads can come to the school any time to talk."
