NEWPORT—Through the generosity of Toms, a for-profit
manufacturer of shoes and eyeglasses based in Santa Monica, California,
hundreds of Cocke County elementary students now have new shoes.
Kathy Holt, who oversees Cocke County’s Save the Children
programs, announced the gift during Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Cocke
County Board of Education.
“Save the Children requested the shoes,” said Holt, “and did
all the paperwork. As a result of the gift, every student at Northwest,
Edgemont, Smoky Mountain, and Cosby Elementary School will receive a new pair
According to Holt, the company donates one pair of new shoes
to a child for every pair of shoes that are sold. “We are thankful to Toms and
to Save the Children for bringing this program to Cocke County.”
