NEWPORT-The Cocke County Sheriff's Department returned
stolen merchandise to owners with proof of ownership, and then held an auction
of 200 remaining uncollected items, on Friday, Oct. 11.
Sheriff Fontes stated on Monday, Oct. 14 that the
department, in holding its first-ever auction, made $9,764 by selling 200 items
from various drug raids within the past few months. In addition, four seized
vehicles were sold on a government Web site, which brought in an additional
$10,000, he said.
"We had close to 200 people attend the event, and it
was very successful," the sheriff stated. He added, "The response
from those who attended was very encouraging."
