COSBY—A dominant effort by No. 3 Cosby High School advanced them to the next round of the District 2-A/AA Tournament on Monday evening.
The Lady Eagles dispatched No. 6 West Greene by an 8-1 margin in the quarterfinals of the tournament at Raymond Large Field behind a five-goal night by junior Brooke Schreder. With the win, Cosby advances to tonight’s (5 p.m.) District 2-A/AA semifinal at No. 2 Chuckey-Doak High School.
Tuesday night’s winner will advance to Thursday night’s district title game and automatically qualifies for next week’s Region 1-A/AA semifinal round.
Schreder scored the first four goals of the match, all of which came over a 14-minute span in the first half. However the start was not all rosy for the Lady Eagles.
West Greene opened the match on an offensive spurt, including a shot off the cross bar by senior Cheyenne Upton. The shot was the lone shot on goal of the half by the Lady Buffaloes, who had no match for Cosby on the defensive end.
“We were still slow in starting like we’ve been all year,” Cosby coach Ken Green said. “But once they got started, they started clicking.”
