ROME, Ga.—A rainout and a top-5 finish over the weekend helped Newport’s Jimmy Owens claim his third straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship on Sunday night.
The top-5 finish in Woodstock, Ga. extended Owens’ lead over second place driver Steve Francis to 125 points. The cancellation of Sunday night’s event at Rome International Speedway was enough to clinch the series title for Owens, with only one more weekend remaining on the series schedule.
The LOLMDS title is the third straight for Owens, who first claimed the hardware in 2011. While his points lead has grown in recent weeks, Owens had to fight back from second place earlier this summer to earn this championship.
