KNOXVILLE—Needing to find a way to weather the storm of South Doyle’s offense, the Cocke County High School Fighting Cocks found themselves under the swell of a 27-point second quarter surge on Friday night.

The Cherokees picked up their second District 2-AAA victory of the season on the heels of that 27-point quarter, en route to a 41-14 victory over Cocke County on Friday night at Billy K. Nicely Memorial Stadium.

A battle of field position, which squarely went in the favor of South Doyle, and an athletic offensive attack put the Fighting Cocks (1-4, 0-2) in the early fast half hole. Cocke County was also limited to only 24 yards of offense on 24 plays in the game’s first two quarters.

“We struggled to move the ball early on and were backed up and it put our defense in a bind,” Cocke County coach Caleb Slover said. “Then they score a touchdown or so and our kids hit a lull that something bad has happened and now we’re in trouble.

“We can’t afford to get behind early, lose momentum early and get ourselves in trouble,” Slover said.
