NEWPORT-The caregiver of a bedridden woman allegedly trapped in an extremely filthy home was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 18, and charged with physical abuse or gross neglect of an impaired adult, the Cocke County Sheriff's Office reported.

Gail Gann, 71, of 605 Old Sevierville Highway, in Newport, was arrested at Newport Medical Center around noon while visiting the victim who is allegedly mentally and physically handicapped, Deputy Sheriff Michael Whitmer reported.

Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes praised the efforts of Whitmer, along with Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Ochs, plus the Cocke County Fire Department, for acting on an anonymous tip to 911 that the victim was trapped in bed with trash piled above her head in her bedroom, and elsewhere.
