NEWPORT-Newport Utilities is reportedly ready to pay for
the installation of a new traffic light in downtown Newport, and to change the
timing to improve traffic flow, according to Newport Mayor Connie Ball.
The Newport City Council approved a motion when it met
Tuesday, Sept. 10, to send the two requests to NU's board of directors, who
have final say in the matter.
Ball said NU engineer Jimmy Robertson told him and others
at a meeting about downtown signalization that NU was interested in paying the
estimated cost of $150,000-$200,000 needed to pay for a modern traffic light
system at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Broadway, plus make the intersection
pedestrian-ready and with wheelchair access.
