NEWPORTA valiant effort by the Cocke County High School Fighting Cocks fell just short of an upset bid in their District 2-AAA opener on Friday night.

Cocke County corrected its offensive woes and scored its first two touchdowns of the 2013 season, but it was not enough as Seymour High School escaped with a 19-14 victory at Larry Williams Stadium.

A potential go-ahead drive by the Fighting Cocks was spoiled by a controversial penalty in the latter stages of the game, turning a first down in the Seymour red zone into a long third down at the Eagles' 47-yard line. Cocke County was never able to recover the momentum it had established as they attempted to drive for the go-ahead touchdown.

"We had a lot of opportunities tonight," first-year Cocke County coach Caleb Slover said. "Our effort tonight, not seeing the film was A-minus effort.

"That's what it's going to take every night," Slover said. "We searched our hearts this week and challenged our kids that if it was all about effort, that we could win this game, and we had our chances to win the game."
