A donkey strolling along Cosby Highway caused a delay for back-to-work and school traffic after Labor Day weekend on Tuesday morning.

“Jack” didn’t get far from his home near Lane’s Market, perhaps a mile, when a Cavalier driven by Michelle Kellett gave him a bump. She stopped. The donkey stopped and so did dozens of vehicles.

Cocke County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Hollis Emmons responded to the Jay-walking donkey shortly after 8 a.m., because traffic was backing up in the northbound lane.

The owner of the pet donkey retrieved him at the scene by 8:30 a.m. and said Jack had accidentally gotten loose from being tied up at his home. The donkey was quiet, obeying the law officer, and apparently not suffering any pain.

Kellett, who lives at Triple Creek Campground, said she had taken her children to school and was returning home when she saw the donkey wandering in the road and accidentally bumped into it.
