NEWPORT-The driver of a four-wheeler allegedly driving
illegally on a highway was seriously injured during a wreck with another
vehicle, and airlifted to a Knoxville hospital, on Friday, Aug. 30, the Cocke
County Sheriff's Office reported.
The driver of a 1977 Honda Accord, Larry D. Barnes, 51,
of 1251 Mayberry Way, in Newport, said he was traveling north on Raccoon Valley
Road when, at about 4:20 p.m., near Chipmunk Hollow Way, while negotiating a
curve, an ATV driven by Philip W. Denny Jr., 21, of 802 Blue Ridge Way,
Newport, allegedly crossed the middle part of the road, skidding into the left
front wheel of the Honda and causing the ATV driver, Denny, to be thrown off
the four-wheeler and onto the ground, where he suffered serious injuries.
Denny was airlifted by helicopter to the University of
Tennessee Medical Center, Lt. C. J. Ball reported.
