NEWPORT-The driver of a four-wheeler allegedly driving illegally on a highway was seriously injured during a wreck with another vehicle, and airlifted to a Knoxville hospital, on Friday, Aug. 30, the Cocke County Sheriff's Office reported.

The driver of a 1977 Honda Accord, Larry D. Barnes, 51, of 1251 Mayberry Way, in Newport, said he was traveling north on Raccoon Valley Road when, at about 4:20 p.m., near Chipmunk Hollow Way, while negotiating a curve, an ATV driven by Philip W. Denny Jr., 21, of 802 Blue Ridge Way, Newport, allegedly crossed the middle part of the road, skidding into the left front wheel of the Honda and causing the ATV driver, Denny, to be thrown off the four-wheeler and onto the ground, where he suffered serious injuries.

Denny was airlifted by helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Lt. C. J. Ball reported.
