NEWPORT—The first home match of the 2013 season turned out successful for the Cocke County High School boys golf team.
The Fighting Cocks defended their home course of Smoky Mountain Country Club for a 15-stroke victory over District 2-AAA foe Morristown East High School. Cocke County scored a 159-174 win over the Hurricanes, led by a pair of players.
Isaac Buckner captured medalist honors with a round of 35, while junior Alex Hutson also finished with a strong round of 38 to lead the Fighting Cocks.
Morristown East had no golfer finish under 40 strokes, with Andrew McGinnis leading the way with a round of 42.
Cory Hensley also had a round of 42, while Wesley Lewis had a 44 for the Fighting Cocks to cap off their strong effort on the day.
Morristown East also received scores of 43 from Wisdom Naysmith, 44 from Connor Long and 45 from Hunter Blanken.
In ladies play, the Lady Red fell in the team competition part of the day by an eight stroke margin to the Lady Hurricanes. Morristown East finished the day with a score of 93, compared to 101 for the Lady Red.
However, Cocke County sophomore Rachel Watts continued her solid play on the links as she again captured event medalist honors for the day. Watts finished the day with 43 strokes, which was one better than Morristown East’s Brooke Harmon with a 44.
Alexis Andrews carded a 55 for the Lady Red, while Kaylan Lilley shot a 49 for Morristown East High School.
Cocke County returns to the course on Thursday as they host Cherokee High School.
The match, against the resurgent Cherokee team, is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Smoky Mountain Country Club.
