NEWPORT-It took two rounds of voting in what was a close
contest, but the 911 board on Tuesday, Aug. 27 elected dispatcher Nancy Hansel
to be the new 911 director.
In the secret balloting, the board first gave the three
finalists the following votes: Hansel, three; Matthew Whaley, three; and
current interim director Crystal Ottinger, two.
The tie prompted a "run-off election" of the
top two vote getters: Hansel and Whaley. In that round of voting, Hansel
garnered four votes, while Whaley got three votes.
Board chairman Maurice Shults said to Hansel, who was
present, as were Ottinger and Whaley, "Congratulations. To all three
candidates, I thank you for your interest."
Shults then turned to Ottinger, who has been the interim
director for several months since former 911 director Kathy Cody was fired over
an ethics issue, "Miss Crystal, we truly appreciate your (service) as
interim director ... I respectfully hope you will accept your (former) position
as assistant director" to Hansel.
