NEWPORT—After a hearing Thursday afternoon, Circuit Judge
Ben W. Hooper II denied a motion for a new trial filed by a Cosby man who was
convicted last February of second-degree murder.
Judge Hooper had sentenced Randy Ray Ramsey, 33, of South
Highway 32, Cosby, to 25 years in prison after a two-day trial in February in
Cocke County Circuit Court and a sentencing hearing last May.
The judge ordered that the full sentence be served before
Ramsey is eligible for parole on the second-degree murder conviction.
Ramsey was convicted last February 14 of second-degree
murder in connection with the shooting death of his 33-year-old girlfriend,
Mollie Greene Howard, in the apartment they shared in the Park Entrance Grocery
off Cosby Highway. Although defense attorney Jessica Sisk argued that the
shooting was a tragic accident, the prosecution contended that it was a
