Customers of Newport Tire & Towing may be as upset as owner Burch Wood is over the
recent decision by the national farm equipment company to pull the Newport
dealership and leave a vacuum.
Wood has been planning for the 40th anniversary
of Newport Tire Center, its former name. But with the loss of the John Deere
farm and lawn equipment dealership, it was time to change the business name,
Newport Tire & Towing LLC, as it will be known, has
hosted John Deere’s famous green equipment and implements for about 28 years. “They
asked me to take the dealership in 1988,” he recalls.
Over the past quarter century, Newport Tire continued as a
tire, towing, roadside assistance, and auto repair business. “We thrived as the
John Deere dealership, too.”
