NEWPORT-Cocke County set an all-time sales tax revenue
record in July, with $835,859.64 coming into the county.
The mark is more than $9,000 higher than the previous
record of $826,855.38, which was set in January of 2012.
Cocke County Finance Director Anne-Bryant Hurst pointed
out the July numbers are actually reflective of sales in June, while the
January 2012 numbers reflect sales in December 2011.
"Before that, our best year ever was in the 2007-08
fiscal year," said Bryant-Hurst. "The economy then went bad and the
numbers went down until the 2011-12 fiscal year. Last year, we were just a
whisker lower but pretty much the same. We were down less than one
percent...just .29 percent."
