COSBY—The Cosby football team has its final tune-up on Friday evening before the start of the regular season.
The Eagles host Tri-Cities Christian Academy at Raymond Large Field and they still have a few questions that need to be answered. The scrimmage is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Cosby has several starting spots nailed down already, but head coach Kevin Hall acknowledged there are still a few jobs up for grabs.
“We’re definitely on our way to narrowing down who the starters are. We’ve still got positions open,” Hall said. “We told the kids that before the first scrimmage. No position is locked down. You’re still competing for a spot on the field, and hopefully by the end of Friday night we’ll know for sure who our ones and who our twos are.”
“We’re looking to figure out who our guys are going to be, who’s going to step up and take those spots. In that final scrimmage, that’s really what we have to use that for.”
There are certain spots that are locked down, at least in the coaches minds. They aren’t ready to reveal any of that information just yet though.
“There have been about 15 kids that have just worked their tail off since last season, and you can tell it,” Hall said. “Those 15 are going to be on the field on one side of the ball or the other. It’s not just because they showed up to work. It’s because the work has made them better.
“The work they’ve put in has made them the best player in that spot. They’ve earned it and they’ve gotten better because of their work.”
While some of the position battles are over, there are several still up for grabs. That will most assuredly create an exciting atmosphere on Friday.
Even though it’s not the regular season, the players know they have to perform well to try and earn that starting role.
“There’s probably 10 or 12 more that’s fighting for the remainder of those spots and that includes special teams,” Hall said. “There’s not a whole lot of questions left out there. We’ve got a pretty good idea with the exception of just a handful of places. We’ve got two or three kids fighting for one spot in a handful of places.”
The Eagles are familiar with Tri-Cities Christian, having played them in their jamboree last year at Hancock County.
Look for an athletic bunch that should test the Eagles ability on both sides of the football.
Tri-Cities will also display a form of the Wing-T offense, which is very similar to the offense ran by Cosby’s first opponent of the regular season, Pigeon Forge.
The Eagles hope this will help prepare them for the Tigers in Week Zero.
“From what I hear, they’re pretty athletic,” Hall said. “I don’t think they’ve got a whole lot of kids, but from I hear they’re improved from last year. And they weren’t terrible last year. I know they’ve got a couple of really good running backs.
“I’m pretty sure they’re going to run a Wing-T type offense, which is a good tuneup for us because we’re pretty sure Pigeon Forge is going to run something similar to that. It’ll be a good look for us going into our first real game, going against (Tri-Cities) offense.”
The scrimmage should also give Cosby fans an early look at their squad. Hall hopes to see a big crowd on Friday night to support the Eagles.
Even though it’s a normal scrimmage as opposed to the originally scheduled jamboree, there is going to be plenty of action throughout the night.
“We’re hoping a bunch of people will come out,” Hall said. “That was supposed to be our jamboree, but hopefully a lot of people will still come out and see us scrimmage. We’re going to try and set it up to look and feel as much like a game as possible.”
“It’d be a great opportunity for fans to come out and get an early look at us.”
Cosby opens the regular season on August 23 at Pigeon Forge. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
