Plain Talk wins 13 awards in 2013 UT-TPA Press Contest

NASHVILLE—The Newport Plain Talk won 13 awards, including three first place awards, in the 2013 UT-TPA State Press Contest.

Winners were announced Friday, July 19, at the Millennium Maxwell House in Nashville.

Sports Editor Seth Butler captured two first place awards in the categories of Best Sports Writing and Best Sports Photograph and also claimed a second place for Best Sports Coverage. Sports department employees Caleb Chrisman and Chris Taylor also shared in the Sports Coverage award, which recognizes the best sports section.

Meanwhile, Duay O'Neil won first place in Investigative Reporting for his series of articles on Exit 438.

The Plain Talk also received second place awards for Make Up and Appearance, thanks to the efforts of Tina Pierson, Katie Pittser and Rick Hooper.

Third place awards were received for Best Headline Writing, Best Special Issue and Best News Photograph. Pittser, O'Neil and Hooper had the winning headline entries, while the Smoky Mountain Homeplace won for best special issue. Those contributing to the section were O'Neil, Tina Pierson, Janie Holt, Jason Kolar, Janene Bradley, Sharon Bryant, Betty McMillan and Vickie Mason. Nelson Morais' photos of the rockslide cleanup on Interstate 40 was third in Best Photograph.
