NEWPORT-A gasoline spill just before midnight Monday forced the closure of Cosby Highway and the evacuation of several businesses and West Sequoyah Drive residences.

The spill reportedly occurred while a tanker truck was delivering gasoline to the Marathon convenience store on Cosby Highway. Due to a malfunction, gasoline began pouring out of the vehicle and the delivery driver was unable to stop the flow. As a result, gasoline flowed down Cosby Highway and onto West Sequoyah Drive.

"We got the call around 11:30 p.m.," said Newport Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Ottinger, who served as incident commander. "A valve malfunctioned and then a safety mechanism also malfunctioned.
