Newport Utilities reports scam

NEWPORT—Newport Utilities has received phone calls from their customers alerting them to a possible scam.

According to Administrative Assistant Patti Briggs of the utility, an NU customer received a phone call that showed on their caller ID as an 800 number and were told that they had a credit balance left on an older utility account. The caller then wanted the customer to supply them with a current checking or savings account number so they could supposedly direct deposit the “credit amount” into that account.

Newport Utilities would like their customers to know that this call is not from NU and that they need to beware of this type of scam activity.
