NEWPORT—Rafting companies on the Pigeon River may get
another put-in ramp if a fee increase is accepted.
Members of the Cocke County Legislative Body’s Finance
Committee Thursday approved providing $118,000 for construction of the ramp
with one stipulation. The committee also voted to increase the fee the county
receives from each rafter from the current $2 "to $3, not to exceed
This issue arose when Cocke County Clerk Janice Butler
addressed the committee. Butler reminded members that last March rafting
companies had requested the new ramp. At the time, the committee agreed to look
at the issue during budget discussions.
“The ramp would help with traffic congestion,” said
Butler. “You would also have to move the work shack.”
Committee member Michael McCarter inquired about
increasing the fee to pay for the project.
