NEWPORT—The Public Safety Committee of the Cocke County
Legislative Body will soon examine the future and powers of constables in the
Following a complaint about Second District Constable
Derek Wright lodged before the CLB Monday evening, members agreed to have the
committee take up the matter.
Randy Shults of Harford, which is in the First District,
brought the matter to the forefront. CLB members voted to suspend the rules so that
Shults could address the body about the situation.
“We have a constable, Derek Wright of the Second
District, who is coming into the First District, profiling and writing a bunch
of tickets,” said Shults. “He gets like $25 for each ticket he writes. I heard
he made $2,800 in one month. Each district has its own constable. We did not
elect Derek Wright. We feel like he’s stepping on toes, and a lot of
law-abiding citizens are upset.”
