With less than seven weeks left until the 2013 high school football season kicks off, both local high schools are making preparations for their season opener on August 23.

Those season openers, which will both be held in Sevier County, mark a 10-week regular season journey for both schools as they seek a return to the TSSAA Football Playoffs for the first time since 2011. The 2013 season will mark the first year of a two-year contract year for games between schools. In Tennessee, the TSSAA requires schools to enter into two-year agreements with opponents, meaning schedules are locked in every two years.

Cocke County High School will kick off their 2013 campaign, and the Caleb Slover era, as they travel to Gatlinburg-Pittman High School on August 23. Meanwhile, Cosby opens their season as they go to Pigeon Forge High School.

The season openers were originally planned to be held as part of a doubleheader on August 24 on the new artificial playing surface at Hammonds Field at Gatlinburg-Pittman, however, sources indicated that agreements could not be reached between Gatlinburg-Pittman and Pigeon Forge High School to hold the doubleheader.

Talks to play the Saturday evening twinbill in Gatlinburg got far enough for Cosby to enter into the TSSAA’s two-year contract with Pigeon Forge, after originally seeking to play Tri-Cities Christian in its opener.

Instead the two schools will now play separate games on Friday night.
