NEWPORT-The Jefferson/Cocke County Utility District moved quickly to shut off gas to La Carreta Mexican Restaurant on Cosby Highway on Monday morning in order to avoid a possibly dangerous, explosive situation.

Workers doing a routine check of the restaurant's building detected a natural gas leak inside and immediately ordered the gas company to shut off gas to it, said Tommy Bible, general manager of JCCUD.

Bible stated that gas had built up to three percent. He noted that there is a possibility of an explosion occurring if the percentage is anywhere between five and 14 percent.

The restaurant and "A Cut Above Hair Design close to the restaurant were closed when the call for help came into the Newport Fire Department at 9:33 a.m.
