NEWPORT-Members of the Cocke County Board of Education received somber news Thursday night regarding the new gymnasium floor at Del Rio Elementary School.

Safety Coordinator Casey Kelley told the board a faulty 90-elbow in a new pipe failed sometime during the night of Tuesday, June 11.

" The fire alarm sounded at 4:40 a.m. Wednesday," said Kelley, "Jan (Dellinger, Del Rio Principal) and the Del Rio Volunteer Fire Department quickly arrived and spent most of the day yesterday and today getting the water out."

However, Kelley continued, the new floor is ruined. "It will have to be torn out and completely replaced," he said.

According to Kelley, Del Rio students "will be without a gym floor a few weeks, if not a few months. It will take three weeks start to finish."
