NEWPORT-Faced soon with preparing a 2013-14 budget, members of the Cocke County Legislative Body's Finance Committee are also trying to bandage the current fiscal year budget with last minute transfers and amendments.

As noted during Monday's Finance Committee meeting, of particular concern is inmate medical costs in the Cocke County Jail. Cocke County Finance Director Anne Bryant-Hurst told members the medical costs line item is facing a shortfall.

"With these (amendments), you're putting over $30,000 and it won't be enough to get through the year," she said. "We've taken money from about every line item we could."

Bryant-Hurst said the budget for inmate medical expenses started with $165,000. During the course of the year, more than $95,000 has been transferred into the account from other line items to help cover expenses.

"It's unpredictable," said Committee member Michael McCarter. "We've dealt with this for years."
