NEWPORT-Three women became ill at three different times of the day on Friday, May 31, in the Eastern Plaza, but the causes of the women's sicknesses were not determined and may have been coincidence.

Firefighters with the Newport Fire Department were called out at 1:30 p.m. after someone in the Goodwill Store in the shopping center called to say a woman had passed out, perhaps due to smoke or gas.

Two fire trucks and two police cruisers responded to the scene.

Reportedly, both Goodwill and Dollar General Stores were searched by firefighters, who found no smoke, no carbon monoxide and detected no gas leaks.
