Crusher Broken: Highway Dept. between no rock and a hard place

NEWPORT-The Cocke County Highway Department has found itself between no rock and a hard place.

Road Supt. Kenneth Ford advised members of the Cocke County Highway Commission Tuesday that the department's rock crusher broke down about two weeks ago. He also pointed out the department does not have the money to make needed repairs.

"It was bought back in the 1950s," said Ford. "Initially, we were told it would cost about $30,000 to fix. Now, they've advised us it will cost between $140,000 to $150,000."

Ford said a new crusher would likely cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Ford says the Highway Department does not have a huge stockpile of gravel, but probably has enough to get through the summer.

"Once we get to fall of the year, we'll be hurting if something isn't done," he said.
