NEWPORT-Members of the Finance Committee of the Cocke
County Legislative Body voted Monday to seek bids for an addition to the
Courthouse Annex that would be used for storing voting machines.
County Finance Director Anne Bryant-Hurst told members
that, for several years, the machines had been stored at the Cocke County Fire
"They have to be in a climate-controlled area,"
she said. "But the fire department got another truck and they need the
space. And, the county is at a loss for storage space."
Bryant-Hurst reported the county has gotten estimates
from Brockwell Construction Company on closing portions of the courtyard space
at the annex as a means to store the machines. The estimate for a 370
square-foot area would be $32,375 and the estimate for a 135 square-foot space
was $16,875. The price per square foot would be cheaper for the larger area,
estimated at $87.50 per square foot, while the smaller area is estimated at
$125 per square foot.
Bryant-Hurst pointed out, however, the cost of the
project would require the county to obtain bids. She added, if the cost
exceeded $25,000, the firm chose would be required to have an architect,
according to state law.
