NEWPORT-Cocke County landowners receiving new assessment change notices will not be getting the old style postcard announcements.

Instead, the new assessments are in letter form, says Cocke County Property Assessor Margaret Sorrell.

"What you will receive is marked 'Assessment Change Notice,'" said Sorrell this week. "These letters are being mailed to you if you have recently purchased or sold a portion of property, or if you have made any changes to existing structures or if you have new construction on your property."

Such changes include new garages, carports, and utility buildings, according to Sorrell.

"You will also receive a notice if your property has been reviewed and something was missed in prior years."

Business owners will also receive a notice regarding personal property, Sorrell continued and asked that anyone having closed a business and who receives an assessment notice to call her office at 423-623-7024.

The assessment letters include information about laws, including the Greenbelt Law, applications to owners of 15-acre tracts or larger, as well as the Tax Relief Program for elderly or disabled people. She said the information also explains how to appeal the appraised value of property if the owner disagrees with it.
