COSBY-The Cosby soccer team made history on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles knocked off Grainger 4-3 in overtime to win its first ever postseason game in the Region 1-A/AA quarterfinals.
Senior Kyle Stanton scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute, and the Eagles held off a scrappy Grizzlies squad in the final minutes of the extra period.
With the win, the Eagles advance to the Region 1-A/AA semifinals where they will travel and face Greeneville next Tuesday.
“Tonight is a special night for the guys, and a special night for the program,” Cosby head coach Dan Schreder said. “I wish soccer carried more weight in the county, but I think it’s a sport that’s gaining a little bit of popularity. Hopefully we can continue that going forward.
“Maybe there was a youngster in the crowd tonight saying ‘Hey, I saw Cosby win a big game.’ And that means a lot towards growing a sport in the county. But tonight was a special night for the boys and it was monumental for our program.”
