NEWPORT-Gusty winds did not prevent Cocke County Relay for Life supporters from celebrating a year's hard work Friday night at Cocke County High School's Hedrick Field.

Dozens of cancer survivors, caregivers, team members and other supporters took over the school's football field for a nightlong event of continued fundraising, food, music, games, and dedication to their ongoing pursuit of cures for all types of cancer.

Committee members Kathy Edmonds, Karen Hekel, and Debbie Reed were among those greeting arrivals for the yearly event and offered luminaries in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of cancer victims for later placement around the track.

Also welcoming the celebrants were whiffs of delicious food sold by various teams as part of their fundraising efforts. Customers quickly lined up at Union Baptist Church's tent to purchase servings of their legendary chess squares, slices of walnut cake, and chili and chips.

Youngsters quickly found Parrottsville United Methodist Church's tent where team members painted faces as fast as they could. Bounce houses overseen by Cosby High School's cheerleaders also provided fun for younger attendees.
