NEWPORT-The barking of her dogs and a working smoke alarm alerted Wilma Dollar of a fire in her home at 520 Woodlawn Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Newport Fire Department Chief Randy Ragan said the initial call regarding the blaze came into the department at 6:32 a.m. and the first of two shifts, this one under the direction of Battalion Chief Donnie Rowland, was immediately dispatched to the scene. A total of 16 firemen worked the blaze.

Within a short time, the next shift of firemen reported for duty and they took a second truck to the fire.
