NEWPORT-For the second straight year, the Cosby Eagles are the District 2-A regular season champions.
Cosby clinched their second straight title with a commanding 16-0 five inning victory over Washburn High School on Monday night at the Newport City Park. The same two teams will meet in Washburn this evening, as the Eagles try to run the table with a perfect 4-0 record in district play again this year.
“This is what we’ve worked for,” Cosby coach David Williamson said. “We’ve already picked us up a ball for the trophy case.
The Eagles, who collected only seven hits in the game, capitalized on a number of miscues by a pitching-thin Pirates squad. Of the 24 men that reached base in the game, 15 did so without putting the ball into play.
